Water Sports
Dartmoor offers some fantastic canoeing and white water rafting opportunies. The River Dart is the most popular canoeing destination in the National Park and the magnificent white water is considered by many canoeing enthusiasts to be amongst the best Mid Grade Runs in the west. Dartmoor's rivers are home to many types of wildlife and are important for recreational fishing so waterborne activities, including canoeing, can only take place within the National Park, with the owner's consent. Such access is generally only offered to British Canoe Union (BCU) members. For further information and to obtain a permit see http://www.dartaccess.co.uk

Cycling on Dartmoor
Dartmoor is a genuine cycling experience offering a range of routes to challenge all levels of ability and experience. Families can enjoy quiet days out along the trails created along disused railway lines, whilst the more experienced riders can test their stamina and endurance along the Dartmoor Way
.

The Dartmoor Way
90 mile circular route. Rating: easy to challenging
The Dartmoor Way cycle route sweeps around the periphery of the Dartmoor National Park for over 90 miles linking many towns and attractions along its length, with an option to ride across the centre of the Park via Princetown.

The Plym Valley Way- Saltram House to Clearbrook

12 mile route. Rating: easy The Plym Valley Way follows the course of the old Great Western Railway line through tunnels and across viaducts. Most of this cycle way is off road - following the abandoned railway line, there is a slight incline, but nothing too taxing. Stunning views, historic woodlands, Isambard Kingdom Brunel's curved Shaugh Tunnel and a return journey that's nearly all down hill.

Burrator Reservoir
4 mile circular route. Rating: easy - mostly level
A very easy and mostly level route around Burrator Reservoir. Stunning views across the reservoir to open moorland, many footpaths to explore. Dramatic overflows from the tops of the dam after periods of wet weather and vibrant displays of rhododendrons and azaleas.

Horse Riding
Beginners and more experienced horse riders all agree that riding across Dartmoor is hard to beat. You can ride out on the open moor - provided that it’s common land . trot along woodland trails and bridleways, or follow in the hoofprints of ancient medieval traders along historic byways linking towns and villages. If you don’t have your own horse, or you.re a novice in the saddle, there are first-class stables listed overleaf offering you a good horse, tuition and an experienced guide. Fishing Dartmoor

Fly Fishing Devon is run by Geoff Stephens and Paul Kenyon who are qualified game angling coaches, experienced and enthusiastic teachers and anglers.

We use several venues including the rivers Yealm, Lyd, East and West Dart.

If requested we can:
  • show you how to modify your cast to deal with awkward situations
  • demonstrate the need for stealth when approaching wild fish
  • share our thoughts on suitable equipment, fly selection and design
  • explain why trout lie in particular parts of a river
  • describe how trout perceive your fly
A day's fishing also involves the unexpected, the unpredictable and the intangible.
Here are some images that give a flavour of what to expect on a guided trip.

Guided fly fishing for trout video We offer full or half-day guided trips. Before your trip we will ask you about your prior experience and what you want out of your day. This helps us tailor the day around your desires and experience.

Westcountry rivers present an interesting set of challenges for experienced and novice anglers. We can help develop and improve the skills needed to catch wild fish in unspoilt surroundings.

If necessary we can lend suitable equipment (a 7' to 8 foot AFTM#3-5 rod and reel, wading staff) and arrange to hire waders. We provide a range of tried and tested flies.

Prince Hall Hotel is fortunate to have the West Dart River on our doorstep.
